Hi! My name is James Nikopoulos. I am associate professor of literature at Nazarbayev University (that’s me below, attempting a snow angel).

I was born and raised in Las Vegas, then went to UCLA and the CUNY Graduate Center. In 2012 I moved to the capital of Kazakhstan to work at a brand new university, and I’ve been there ever since.

As a scholar, I like to examine the ways literature can address questions about how we communicate with each other and understand ourselves. I am especially obsessed with the topic of laughter. (Check out this episode of Counterpoint to hear me talk about offensive laughter.)

I also write essays, fiction, and poetry for whoever wants to read them, and I am an editor at ANGIME [Ahn-Ghee-Mae] an amazing new literary magazine run by my colleagues at Nazarbayev University. Please check it out when you can.

If you’d like to get in touch you can reach me via email.

Thanks for dropping by.
